Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, or Xara X using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Supported SVG features include shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, patterns, and grouping. Inkscape also supports Creative Commons meta-data, node editing, layers, complex path operations, bitmap tracing, text-on-path, flowed text, direct XML editing, and more. It imports formats such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and others and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats.
Inkscape's main goal is to create a powerful and convenient drawing tool fully compliant with XML, SVG, and CSS standards. We also aim to maintain a thriving user and developer community by using open, community-oriented development.

What’s new in version 1.3.2
- Stars, polygons, spirals, 3D boxes are now saved correctly (MR #6090)
- The restoration mechanism does not yet work for Inkscape svg files though some data can be recovered if you open the files. Unfortunately any files you have saved as plain or optimized SVG will never be recoverable, as the shape metadata is irretrievably lost for those file types.
- When using the new 'Text to glyphs' function, lines no longer end with @ signs, when there's a linebreak (MR #6094, Bug #4675).
- Traditional Chinese translation updated (MR #6105)
- Windows installer banner layout fixed (MR #6097)

macOS 13.0.1 continues to have a compatibility problem with the development GUI builder GTK3, which is what's used by the Inkscape open source project. To quote them: "There is an unresolved issue that affects all GTK3 based apps on macOS Ventura, making the app unresponsive to certain mouse events." - -> As such, it is wise to consider 'Version 1.0 Syndrome' and NOT YET upgrade to macOS Ventura if you use Inkscape.

The low aggregate rating for this app (1.5 stars at the time I write this) is largely the result of a the history of negative reviews that are no longer pertinent. First, Inkscape hasn't needed XQuartz since version 1.0 was released in 2019. My experience is that recent versions aren't especially buggy, slow, or prone to crashing. If you're a user of the commercial alternatives, and can afford them, then you're unlikely to need or want this. I owned them in the past, but can't justify the cost anymore, so I use this. It's free, although you should consider making a donation, and functional. It has a steep learning curve, which might intimidate new users, but that is true of any similar app.

The screenshot above should serve as a warning. A tiny space for the actual document and rows and rows of mostly useless icons taking up a huge amount of space. This is software designed by a committee. Absolutely horrible UI!

I love when new vector apps appear, in particular when considering how little Adobe does to maintain Illustrator. In short, Inkscape has some fresh ideas and an interesting array of unusual filters. Unfortunately, on a maxed-out 16' MBP running Catalina, the app is literally unusable, as it needs forever to do even the most basic of tasks. Would love to see this app optimised for the Metal API.
