iPod ripping is buggy (crashed several times when importing) AND resulted in a few corrupted files. There is definitely something wrong with the file handling code.

iPhone ripping is also a pain in the *ss. In fact it uses a trick and not actually ripping it directly from your iPhone. (only works when iTunes is installed and the settings of iTunes are correct).

Tried iPodRip on 3 macs and crashes occurs on all of them (mainly when importing files). It also seems to hang on some point and then continues.

I have e-mailed the developers several times about this, & gotten no response. AXIOMUS  ipodrip no longer sees the content of my ipod, which is strange because i have been using it for a number of years now with no issues. i believed at first this was due to itunes 7, a rather unsavoury product ( but a necessary evil ), but now i feel it is a combination of both itunes and ipodrip; since senuti, el ipodo, ollie's ipod extractor, and three other ipod utilities see the contents of my ipod. but none of those products can recover my ipod properly or possess the feature set of ipodrip i have grown accustomed to.

i hope the developer can rectify the situation soon or at least reply to support emails.

I have had exactly the same problems as others have reported. iPodRip (that I paid for) comes up with "No songs found to display" upon launching, which is all the more annoying in that iTunes sees them just fine. I too emailed support but haven't heard from them yet.

I just upgraded to the newest version of iTunes and applied the 1.1.2 upgrade to my second gen. Nano iPod: could this be the cause of the problems ... ? Hard to know when their support persons seems to have taken permanent leave !

In sum: think twice before paying for this software.

PA1N  I purchased Ipodrip last Feb 2006. I loved its features and ease of use. I also liked the feature that would allow you to see what songs were already in your Itunes compared to those that were not. However in the last week I have had some trouble using Ipodrip, I updated. Same problem.

JBASOM  Read many reviews online of various programs and decided to try this one out (very reluctantly). The results were so good that I felt compelled to post my first ever user review online. In less than three hours, this program restored my entire ipod contents (1644 songs, 4.8 GB of music) to my Power Book G4 running system 10.4.7 and iTunes 6.0. All playlists and songs appear to be completely intact. This just saved me an unbelievable amount of work to reimport all my CD's and reorganize them.

My computer crashed and I had to start over from scratch. I did not have a backup of my iTunes library or playlists. I blame Apple for not having a way to restore from ipod back to Mac because these things can happen. Thank goodness for this program. I was skeptical from some of the reviews I read, but I tried it and it worked great for me!

One tip: try dragging one playlist from ipod to itunes first to be sure it works properly, then do the complete ipod restore if that's what you need.

ALUAKZ  Well... at the beginning it looked fine. However, when compared the songs that I hace on my iPod with the songs displayed in iPodRip, the list was uncomplete. iPodRip just ate about 5% of the songs, and even after I restarted the program and reconnected my iPod it was the same thing. So... the program is very very average and there are much better alternatives - Pod2Go (also shareware) and iPodDisk (freeware), for example.

SAD  this program was great. key word was, then my computer crashed and had to loose all of my files. luckily most of my songs were on my ipod, i've used the trial version before and then when i got my new computer i downloaded it again, then that's when the trouble began. everytime i tried to import songs or even just one song it crashed and my trial version soon ran out. so i bought the shareware license and the same thing happens. i do not know why. i can't import a single song without it "unexpectedly quitting".

CHRIS  I wiped out my entire iTunes library -- 10,154 songs -- from the external hard drive I was storing it on, due to a bonehead mistake. iPodRip managed to transfer all but 91 of those 10,154 songs from my iPod onto my new iMac G5, and kept all the original metadata / song ratings / play counts intact! Genius. It was also completely stable and ran smoothly and (reasonably) quickly -- the whole process took about nine hours but hey, that's a lot of songs. (For what it's worth, the equipment involved: 60GB 4th gen color iPod, iTunes 5, Mac OS X 10.4.2, 2GHz iMac G5 w/ 512MB RAM, Firewire connection.) Totally recommended, and I may cough up the shareware price just to keep it around.

BRETT WALKER  This program has a lot of potential, and is packed with features compared to the other ipod rippers out there. The interface is fairly well thought out, and is not just a window and a couple of buttons like many other similar applications. The UI is very nice. While I've never been a fan of the brushed steel motif (I think it goes against Apple's original usability guidelines), it is consistent with the OS, and this app does a good job. Everything is well laid-out, and there's a lot of detail here, but it is not cluttered.

However, and here is its real downfall, it is not a very stable application. Every time I've used it to transfer songs to my iTunes Library, it crashes. (OS 10.4.2, iTunes 4.9) I don't think it likes to copy more than a few hundred songs at a time, as it seems to be more stable in that instance. Of course, every time it crashes reduces my trial period. One other thing I don't like about the program is that the UI feedback when you copy could be better. Many times it seems like the progress bar isn't moving at all, and you aren't sure if it has frozen or not. It would be useful to provide more granular information about the copying progress.

So, although iPodRip is definitely the most feature-packed and usable of the ipod ripping applications out there, frankly I would not spend money to purchase this product until it becomes less crash-prone. If this product were stable, it would be worth the $15 shareware fee the author requests. But right now I want something that doesn't blow up when I ask it to perform its main function.

Seemed to make sense to use iPodRip to copy it from my iPod onto the mac's hard drive, so I simply clicked "restore" to clone the library onto the new machine. Makes sense, right?

Three days later, the library fnally finished being copied. Granted, I have about 2,000 songs, but THREE DAYS to copy? I'm very surprised with the slowness.

CAROLINE MITCHELL  Installed IpodRip onto ibook running OS10.3 to 'restore' all music from my Ipod after the Apple computer authorized dealer 'accidentally' clean- installed the Ibook hard drive thus destroying my Itunes collection. ipodRip would not 'reload' all tunes from Ipod into Itunes, so i used the method of reloading into a new file and folder on the hard drive. Then I manually copied all this music into the itunes library. Though the copy appeared to work ( that is all names in the hard drive file are now also appearing in the itunes library) Unfortunately the Itunes library does not have the album/artist/ info. Any suggestions ?

ANONYMOUS  Although there are other programs that allow you to rip songs from your iPod, I highly recommend this one. First, customer support is excellent. I wrote to the developer about a feature I wanted (playing iPod songs from the menu bar), and he wrote back almost immediately. He also continued with needed correspondences, and he put the requested feature back into the software. I have also found the program to be stable on my system (I used 10.3.5 and a host of shareware programs.) The price is also very reasonable. At the least, give this program a try.

CODEPOET  I resized the "Compare iPod to iTunes" window and the UI elements went all over the place. The author apparently doesn't resize windows.

I hit Sync Meta Data and after taking my computer over for about 45 seconds and then starting iTunes and such it started to work. I was thinking "Oh, ok, this works" and cancelled it to look around some more. After the window closed the CPU usage still spiked. The thread was never cancelled when I hit the button. I had to quit to make it go away.

Alas, it looks like I'll stick with PodWorks. Shame, because if the features worked as advertised this would be the better deal. I only wish the program was as well-designed as the website and icon.

That's what "SmartSync" says it does--but it does nothing of the sort. Clicking the "SmartSync" button brings up a window which says "allows you to intelligently remove songs from your iPod and places them in iTunes." Uhh, no, I don't want to remove songs from my iPod. Nor do I want to do it one playlist at a time. When I try one playlist, if the files exist, there are many duplicates created.

The "Help" button here is useless, because it just tries to launch Classic and then crashes. Not exactly helpful.

It goes without saying that transfering all the music from an iPod to iTunes is very simple. So if that is all you are looking to do then just type this into the terminal (filling in your ipod and user account name where specified):

cp means copy -d specifies directory -r tells it to do it recursive. the first part of the string specfies the files to be copied the sencond part specifies where to copy them to.

you can also do this but graphically by viewing hidden files. search the web, its a piece of cake to turn hidden files on... can be done with applescripts or free programs like fugu.

of course if you want to play off ipod then this is a nice program... but make sure itunes doesnt try to update your ipod and erase your music.

I had a similar problem to you. I would advise looking through iPodRip's help documents as they are very detailed and lead you through the pitfalls. Apple really needs to clean up their act with iTunes though as iPodRip really isn't all that necessary, but it still does a great job!

JIM BISHOP  WATCH OUT! I had lost the music off my hard drive and wanted to use this to "save" the labor of rerecording 16 Gigs of music by downloading from the iPod. If you are a bone head like me you can destroy the index in the iPod by making some mistake with iPodrip that I don't understand, and you are left with having to go through the entire process AFTER downloading this little gem.

Be careful. It is not an obvious procedure. I have had a Mac since 1983, and this machine is a G4/933/OS 10.3.3.

ANONYMOUS  iPodRip seems to be little more than an ugly clone of MenthaPod. The main difference between the two programs is that one is free and one costs you cash money. The smaller differences are that iPodRip has a few more features-- for instance functions like exporting playlists. In my opinion MethaPod is much better despite not having quite as many features. Perhaps some people would find the additional features useful, I however find them to be frivolous.

I strongly recommend comparing the two before parting from you hard earned dough.

LARRY B  Not quite sure about this. I just burned 3 of my 10 shareware "free" use sessions trying to get it to work. It crashed every time and didn't do anything much.

I have a new iPod 20mb which has worked great with my PB G4 500/Jaguar so I'm trying to get this software to let me use my iPod with my new 20" iMac with Panther. NO GOOD.

Then I tried several times to access the Little App Factory's web site (I got there once to download this app) but their site is as buggy as the app.

Maybe it's just my bad luck but EVERYTHING else on my Macs, web sites and my iPod are all working flawlessly. I hope it's just a coincidence that this program and the support site are both very hard to get to work...

As for the useless tools, Recover Songs saved my iPod's music files thank you. The help files came in very handy in assisting me recover those files. I don't think your criticism is justified in this regard.

If they have done something to you, complain about that, but don't complain about a software release. As for me, I am going to give it the feedback it deserves.

On the other hand, the iPod does have a high recharge/discharge ration in comparison to a PowerBook and the battery is much smaller, so you would expect it to expire faster.

C. CARINO  Nice stuff. It's good to see a iPod/iTunes transfer app actually use an interface similar to iTunes. It makes moving the playlists easy and intuitive. Drag-n-Drop is always the best way to go.

It's also incredibly fast when transferring the files and their attributes. I know firewire is inherently fast, but other similar programs have seemed dead slow at times.

The one dark spot is stability, it did crash a handful of times, eating up my trial uses.

Ease of use is great for those who want simplicity and the feature set is great enough for the tweakers out there.

Overall, a very pleasent experience. Bravo

HI REV IMPORTS  I've tried almost all of the programs out there to sync my ipod with my mac...not my mac to my ipod. This is by far the most stable and user friendly program I've used. Click Smart Sync and its done. It also has a nice interface to match iTunes.

ADAM  I would reccomend not spending any money on programs to move files from your iPod to your Mac. I simply use Tinkertool, which is a great program that allows you to customize the look of your desktop. Using Tinkertools, go to Finder and select "Show Hidden Files" and relaunch the finder. Then, when you open your iPod window on your computer, all of your files will show up in folders labled "F0x". Simply import to iTunes and enjoy!

ANONYMOUS  I love this program! I wanted to listen to my music on my iPod at work, but I'm not allowed to put any music on my computer, and I don't like using headphones. IPodRip let's me play my songs right off of my iPod, and it has an interface very similar to iTunes, so it's easy to use. One problem I've noticed is that playing the music in the background when using other processor intensive programs causes the songs to skip pretty often. Also I think one feature that's missing is the ability to minimize the window to just show the controls and what song is playing (like iTunes).

YAGGA YAO  this app is darn good. very simple and very effective. the only problem is that songs aren't categorized, so if you want to find a specific track to transfer from a huge library, you might end up sitting for while looking for it. but you can transfer all the songs at once.
