IRONMAN  Please note that FileMerge can do that for free. It comes with Xcode, in the utilities folder inside the Xcode base. FileMerge is also a cocoa build unlike the one I am commenting now. :)

    ALIIX  ditto

this is a free feature of most text editing programs, comes bundled with mac os x, and there are also freeware applications that do better for free

ANONYMOUS  Diff'npatch and others (see other comments) do the same job, for free, faster, better, and with a better interface.

THEFAIRONE  Rather use DiffFrontend, it's free and it does the same job better.

COPYCAT  Quick recap: if you have not done so already, install the Developer tools from your OS X CD. /Developer/Applications/Utilities/File Merge.app is superior to this item in both functionality and price.

Also, if you want a payware diff tool, BBEdit has an excellent Find Differences command, plus a few thousand other handy features.

BRETT  Thanks for the tip, Copycat. I did check it out (though I don't think everybody wants to bother installing everything from the Developer CD), but the program pointed out the error for the wrong line. And it also didn't highlight text within a line. I seem to remember some freeware earlier which did do the trick better, but I've since moved computers.

    ****.

BRETT  If the critiquers would spend the time they put into critiquing into demonstrating their own great prowess into programming the superior application they seem capable of programming, the user would have more choices, and those who are trying to provide some service in the meantime will not be unnecessarily disparaged. Not using Unix myself or knowing other diffs programs for the mac, I would be happy to use this, even if it is slow in comparing large text files (and though it only shows the lines that have been changed rather than the exact text). I enjoyed AlphaOmega's file concatenating program, so at least I have found some use for their software. So, why don't we prove ourselves with actions and save the real critiques for the programs which are actually harmful in some way (whether in function or content)?

ANONYMOUS  Somebody already has coded a 'superior application.' It's called FileMerge. It's free and you already have it. See the other comments for details.

ANONYMOUS  Wow, 1.2mb for a frontend for 'diff'? It must be RealBASIC. And it must be AlphaOmega software! I can't wait to see this gem listed on www.perversiontracker.com!

ANONYMOUS  Oh, lighten up folks! This kind of thing is the "price" we pay for free development tools, easy-to-use frameworks, and an open market in OS X software.

    "Let the buyer beware." Furthermore...

People should not test downloads using administrative access, by means of which they can do true damage to their systems.

ANONYMOUS  I have downloaded this version of DE 1.2 and in the modified file, I:

    Modifed lines

    Removed Lines

    Added lines

Unfortunately, DE still does *NOT* work, what ever the author says in his comments below...

All edits were shown as "modified", never deleted or added.

This stinks, and the GUI still sucks with navigation issues.
