JEFF H.  Seems that this will not work while using with a Bluetooth headset...a deal-breaker for me as I am disabled and HAVE to use a Bluetooth headset.

Wish I had known that before I bought it...

PETER SICHEL  Since Phone Amego uses the "HandsFree Profile" (HFP) to connect with iPhone, you cannot use a Bluetooth headset connected to your iPhone at the same time. Some cell phones provide a Serial Port Profile (SPP) which you can use to connect with Phone Amego leaving the HFP available for your headset.

Two other options are to use wired earbuds, or use your Mac as a Hands-Free speaker phone and then connect your headset to your Mac. Sustainable Softworks has a 30-day unconditional refund policy if the program does not meet your needs.

WOODEN BRAIN CONCEPTS  In a few short months, Phone Amego has gone from a great idea with a lot of potential to a very solid, full-featured telephony application which mostly realizes that potential. This one simple menu bar application combines features of several other phone-related applications.

It will notify you of incoming calls (with Growl or its internal notification system). You can broadcast incoming Caller ID information over your local network, so every Mac in your house can see who is calling. If you use BoxCar or Prowl with Growl, you can send incoming land line call notifications to your iPhone.

Phone Amego also dials outgoing calls through land lines plugged into a USB modem, bluetooth cell phones (including an iPhone), Google Voice, and VoIP devices. You can even dial a land line attached to one computer from another computer on your local network. It handles numbers in your Address Book intelligently, including "plus-dial" international numbers and local numbers without area codes.

The developer is extremely responsive to suggestions and fixes problems and bugs nearly as quickly as you can throw at him (and I've thrown a lot at him over the past few months).

The chief remaining issues with Phone Amego have to do with a somewhat disjointed interface that makes initial set-up a bit tricky. But this itself is mainly the result of rapid feature expansion. It just got too big for its britches. I'd expect that eventually that will get cleaned up as well.

LIBERTYFORALL1776  This little Phone Friend now has it all, works great with my SPA-2100 -- I can get CID for my iPhone and SIP VoIP without having to run to grab the phones to see who's calling. This is the kind of integration Apple should have built-in! Google Voice fits the dialing bill nicely, as well as BT dialing for iPhones. The developer is very responsive to feature suggestions and bug resolution.

About the only things I can think of that would be additional features to add would be some iChat (maybe Yahoo IM too) contextual menus to allow dialing contacts who have numbers in the Address Book. Also Safari phone number dialing integration like there is on the iPhone, but that's probably something Apple needs to add... The Services menu just doesn't quite fit the bill.

DANA SUTTON  Those of us who use Bento typically use that program as a front end for Address Book, and would welcome a program that directly interacted with Bento.

LIBERTYFORALL1776  This app rocks, it's practically everything you need for the features it supports. My biggest request is to add VoIP (BroadVoice in my case) SIP CID support (SIP dialing wouldn't hurt either). It would then be practically perfect.

CERNIUK  Great in concept, not so great operationally. Software suffers from a number of operational problems that end up making this tool difficult to use. The Smoke "Active Call" Window is the main issue...

When a call is made a Growl-like smoke translucent mini-windows comes up showing the call. This window also displays when an incoming call occurs. There are multiple problems with this window including:

1 - when the window opens, it takes focus away from the front most application and your typing (lets say here in the browser) goes to that window. You are forced to click back on the original application to resume operations in that app (safari in this example)

2 - closing the window always disconnects the call, regardless of the option chosen when prompted. This results in accidental hangup on your party, especially when trying to avoid condition #1 above

3 - if left alone the window disappears but then shortly afterwords reappears and agains steals keyboard and mouse focus away from the application you are in. (aka #1 interruption after interruption)

4 - the action menu on the smoke window has nothing to do with the active call and cannot hangup, redial, add a call, or otherwise modify the active call. It is purely geared towards the address book entry for the individual displayed on the call.

...based upon the problems presented and for consistency sake, it would make more sense to simply adopt the Growl API for this function of Phone Amigo and alleviate all aforementioned problems. The application would also make more sense as a system preference much like the keyboard, mouse, etc. setups. This way we could avoid yet another menu and elect to use iPhone Amigo from the system preferences interface. Both aforementioned mods would take iPhone Amigo's clutter factor down considerably.

Hassle factor of this application is high and the only workaround is to use it to place a call then immediately quit the app to avoid any negative impact to your call or your ability to use your Mac while on the phone.

PETER SICHEL  Thanks for the feedback. The smoke window no longer steals input focus as of version 1.4 . I'm working on some of your other points, but the details are subtle depending on the telephone device used.

DVA  Making good progress. Calls don't hang up on dismissal of dialog now. Entries into calendar every minute of the call in 1.1.4 were hard to deal with… downloaded 1.1.6 to see if fixed. Need to not flash that smoke display window over and over and over during call (in v 1.1.4). Looking forward to 1.1.6's updates.

As a long time customer of Peter's, I expect great stuff ;-)

CERNIUK  Posting the calls to the Amego calendar in iCal is not that bad of an idea but posting multiple calendar events per call makes a real mess. It seems to post an appointment for every 2 minutes of phone call. Worse, they are all coming in with alerts!

My iCal on my Mac AND my iPhone comes up with reminders after the calls… **past** phone calls …. incessantly…. driving me crazy %-(. Turned off Phone Amego until it is fixed.

CERNIUK  Cool feature of the software is the ability to trigger an applescript when the phone is out of range. I wrote an applescript to activate the login window (much more secure than triggering the screen saver which can be bypassed).

So when my phone leaves the Mac's range, Amego triggers "Activate Login Screen" and it cube swivels over to the Macs logins screen, very nice.

But a bit of a problem… it does not store the script into the preferences and when you relaunch Phone Amego, you have to set it up to perform the action again :-(

PETER SICHEL  You asked about Vonage support. If you have a Gizmo or telephone adaptor that converts Vonage (or other VoIP service) to a standard phone line, Phone Amego supports that already when connected through a USB modem. You can also dial out indirectly using Google Voice.

Are you asking Phone Amego to become an SIP client or VoIP phone that runs on your Mac in order to receive caller ID?

Kind Regards,

- Peter

LIBERTYFORALL1776  The problem with Vonage is that that the SPA hardware they offer is locked, and you typically have no access to the Admin interface...

Vonage has a custom baked version of X-Lite that you could use, but requires an extra fee...

PETER SICHEL  >Apple allows one to pair your iPhone to your Mac ... but not connect. Correct?

Not exactly, it depends on what you are trying to do.

Phone Amego opens an RFCOMM connection using the Handsfree Profile (HFP) just like a Bluetooth headset. From there it can detect when the phone rings, request call status, or instruct the phone to dial. In practice it works quite well. One limitation is you can't use a Bluetooth headset and Phone Amego at the same time.

While iPhone does not offer the same rich interface as other Bluetooth phones, it does just enough to provide onscreen callerID and click to dial from your Address Book.

FRANKNS  Okay ...

Maybe it would be nice to have some kind of confirming message from Amego, telling us that the iPhone connection is live and working? So far, all I've seen is a bluetooth error message, and no way to know that Amego is "live."

MYMAC8MYPC  Phone Amego is a great application that monitors your compatible Bluetooth cellphone and notifies you of a incoming call via a popup window on your Mac. This window displays the caller's phone number, and if the contact is in your Mac's built in Address Book, the window will display the callers name, phone number and photo. In conjunction with Google Voice, you can initiate calls within Address Book without having to dial the number on your cell phone. Simply click on "work" or "home" to the left of the phone number and select "Dial with Phone Amego" or "SMS with Phone Amego". This Snow Leopard compatible application resides in your menu bar where you can access all of Phone Amego's preferences which includes launching an AppleScript with inputs such as an incoming call, or your cell phone is out of range. I have Phone Amego set up with my Google Voice account and my iPhone. When I get a call I have an AppleScript play a iTunes song that says

"ring... ring... your iPhone is ringing" the song plays through my AirPort Express connected to a whole house speaker system. I didn't find any bugs in the latest build and the developer answers questions promptly. All in all, I highly recommend this app!
