DESCRIPTION
xACT stands for X Audio Compression Toolkit. It is a GUI based front end written in AppleScript Studio for the Unix applications Shorten, shntool, monkey's audio compressor, flac, and cdda2wav with paranoia support. It also uses a modified md5sum and sox. It does the basic commands of these applications and adds a few features to speed up productivity in creation of etree.org standard filesets.

AIKOUSHA  I'm quite confused with the yahoo-group routing as none of the questions seem to have anything to do with xACT... so...

I was thrilled to see the "Auto-Name" function in the FLAC Tags area, until I tried to use it. It has major problems with double-quotes and Unicode characters. Unicode tends to get converted to "###" for each character, and quotes bollux the whole thing, and return error messages saying the tag writes to those files failed, due, most likely to a "missing file."

Unfortunately, I'm not that familiar with FLAC tags, to know if double-quotes and unicode are forbidden. If there are limitations inherent in the actual tag layout, it might be best to include those in the dialog box that the title list goes into.

On top of that, titles tend to get truncated quite frequently, and with no discernable reason (unless there are multiple reasons... characters, length, etc.). The Title "My, Oh My" was truncated to "My, " for example.

And to continue with the automatic functions for tagging, maybe you could also add an "Auto-Number" for the track numbers. This would be massively helpful when I am archiving soundbites (as they tend to be short and easily can fit 99 on a CD).

Things seem to be wonderful, otherwise. Thanks.

****.

HARRY G.  This program is excellent for splitting flac-cue or ape-cue files using the shntool frontend. This makes it a perfect addition to X Lossless Decoder (XLD) which I prefer for converting the splitted files to MP4 (.m4a).

The user interfade is not self-explanatory but still much more comfortable than the naked UNIX tools behind the scenes.

Thanks a lot to the programmer(s)!

AUTODIDACT  I needed a program to convert .flac to something that iTunes could play. This met my needs and the program is free!

KEWL  @ AUTODIDACT

You should try XLD. It's also free and it's more transparent to use. Simple drag and drop.

DEMOGORGON  Running 10.5.6, MacBook Pro 15"

Clicked shntool tab

Clicked split button

Selected wav output

added my .ape file

... then clicked Call Shntool and got this odd output:

sh: shntool: command not found

How is this possible? I have shntool installed BOTH in my /opt/local/bin AND in the Contents/Resources/Binaries/bin of the app itself?

VERYCARLA  The CD ripping feature doesn't seem to work. I'm working with a clean, unscratched CD which I want to rip. I've had xAct 1.64 working for half an hour, and it's produced zero results. I don't hear any noise coming from the drive at all, and there should be something, as it's a fairly noisy drive.

MacOS X 10.5.4, MacBook 1.83ghz Core Duo, 2gb RAM. Ripping to internal hard drive from internal CD-RW.

IAMNOSKCAJ  Does anyone know WHY Growl support was removed from v1.61?? From the notes of 1.62, it wasn't added back.

Strange!

XSMURF  I'm speaking through my hat, but GrowlHelper is a little flawed in 10.5.X and takes a LOT of CPU and it seems to hang rather often (at least here)
