SmartGit overview

SmartGit is a graphical version-control client for Git, Mercurial, and Subversion. It is designed to wrap Git's and Mercurial's powerful commands into a slick and easy-to-use user interface and runs on Windows, OS X, and Linux.

What’s new in version 22.1.4

Updated on Mar 14 2023

Fixed Bugs:
  • Background scan: fixed memory leak if Detect Local Changes is disabled
  • Changes view: Resolve may fail with "Input length = ..." error depending on the used encodings
  • Fetch More: internal error when trying to fetch non-branch, like Gerrit refs/changes/01/000002/3
  • Standard window:
    • Files: possible incorrect original path shown for renamed file
    • Filter: various regex-selectors, e.g. .* were non-functional
    • GitHub: possible internal error during refresh
    • Rebase may silently do nothing
  • Linux bundle: old .svg file was bundled
Other Noteworthy Changes:
  • Tools: the obsolete ff-merge.sh tool is removed automatically, even if upgraded from older SmartGit versions

Pricing is absurdly unrealistic - $100 for a java app that is a GUI to a command-line tool is simply not acceptable. Consider that apart from the much cheaper, and much more polished commercial alternatives - like Tower and Fork - if you're willing to put up with an non-native, unintuitive interface, there are also several open source and FREE alternatives, like SourceTree.

I want to express kudos to SmartGit devs who kindly acted on my GitLab related bug report, even though I have no entitlement for support with my free license, and fixed a problem it in this version.

Marc at syntevo went along with my submission with best client support practices, as it should be done, including followup emails.

This shows a high level of commitment and care about the product syntevo makes. Even a clause saying that free use of SmartGit for non-commercial comes without support, did not get in the way of improving the app.

Previously used GitKraken but switched to this, for now at least, as I needed GitLab personal access token support. CONs: uses Java and has a so-so UI PROs: I can use GitLab's personal access tokens, Yay! I'm overlooking the CONs and giving the app 5 stars. Because I can :-)

The MU download link downloads a small tat.gz file (4.4 kb), whereas the developer's site has a downloaded for a newer (vers. 4.5.2) and much larger (32.1 mb) dmg file. Also noticed that the version number for a number of applications I am looking at today here at MU appears to be significantly older versions than what are available at the developers' sites. Don't know if this is just happenstance or if there is something systematic going on at MU. This comment is primarily meant for MU, and feel free to purge it.

We recently switched to git and I am very glad to have SmartGit. V3 is more than "just a copy cat of git gui". It's easily the best gui for Windows, although there is competition on the Mac side. Yes it's written in Java but so what? It works well and is stable. Great for those of us still learning the git command line.

Surprisingly SmartGit is not that smart. It's just a copy cat of git gui with little added value. built on top of java, it is quite stable but really doesn't help much in my daily workflow: I still need my command line interface. It is probably the best GIT client for Windows. However on Mac there is a much better alternative (and full featured) called SourceTree.

I'm very happy with SmartGit, just as I was for years with SmartSVN. It has all the features one can want. It's not, like some other Git clients, a simple shell over a standard commandline interface, but adds its own smartness on top of it. I also like the fact that I can configure viewer and comparison tools to be used for particular file types. E.g, for my REALbasic project, I can assign Arbed as the viewer, and for other text files I use BBEdit. Just like with SmartSVN, it's always been 100% reliable and stable for me. And the developers are responsive and helpful, usually within the same day. If I had to complain about something, it'd be the user interface sometimes not following proper Apple guidelines. Sometimes a modal window doesn't appear like one (it appears like a doc window), and similar little things. Nothing of a problem, just a sad little result of this app being in Java, and Apple's Java support lacking (i.e. shame on Apple, not on the SmartGit developers here!). Certainly give this tool a good trial run. It works well, is well maintained, and you can't beat the free personal license.

Have been using it for quite some time and it's wonderful. I've tried GitX, Gity, Gitbox and an extended beta test of Tower (which was excellent, but bloody expensive) and SmartGit wins. The default layouts are sensible, the speed of working with it is excellent, and it's solid and stable. Anyone who overlooks this because it's a non-cocoa client should give it another chance, you're only losing out yourself.

Well, I was wrong. The experimental branch of GitX has a lot of potential, but I've found that it's too buggy even just for casual use. I've switched to using SmartGit, and despite the fact that it's a non-native, java-based app, it's a very well written and well designed Git-Client.

I tried SmartGit and although I had no serious problems using it, it's still a java app and not a native client. I recommend using the experimental branch of GitX instead http://github.com/brotherbard/gitx/downloads. It works very well and it is made for mac.

SmartGit has been my client of choice since its beta has been released and I am really happy with it, I must say. It made my first steps with Git so much easier and is powerful. Sure, one could hope for a native cocoa app as much featured as SmartGit is but don't be fooled by the fact it is a Java application. It works fine and even looks good.

Could do with some screenshots of the Mac OS X version - there's nothing here, and all the shots on the site seem to be from Windows. Looks like a Java app, though - shame it's not native Cocoa :(
